Description

Established by scientist Dr. John Kirk in 1971, Clonakilla is a small family-owned estate at Murrumbateman in Canberra District. Today, this James Halliday’s 5-red-star winery produces a handful of top-quality Shiraz wines by John’s son Tim Kirk, who was awarded “Winemaker of the Year” by Gourmet Traveller WINE in 2013. Inspired by the renowned Côte-Rôtie wines of the Guigal family, their flagship wine Shiraz Viognier was described by James Halliday as “an icon wine, one of the best in Australia” . It is also the only wine from Canberra District to be rated as "Exceptional" in Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine, on par with its counterparts Penfold’s Grange and Henschke’s Hill of Grace.

The 2021 Hilltops Shiraz is a commercially important wine to Clonakilla, being the largest production of the estate. The fruit is from between four and six growers in the Hilltops area, about an hour and a quarter or so away from Murrumbateman. Elevated at 500 to 600 meters above sea level, 2021 was the latest vintage ever for Hilltops, with picking extending into April. The wine is dark, brooding (cool, elegant, long-ripening) and full of classic Hilltops character. The tannins are firmer, "with a little more growl," suggests Tim Kirk. This was made with virtually no whole-bunches ("OK, some, we can't help ourselves," says Kirk) and matured in French oak (15% new) for 12 months. There's a cocoa nib/blackberry character. Very good.
