Description

A romantic medieval Tuscan town, Montalcino is surrounded by hills and dense woods. The soil, altitude and lush topography make Montalcino the ideal home for the Sangiovese grape and the celebrated wine of the area, Brunello di Montalcino. There are parallels between the Tuscan Sangiovese and the Piedmontese Nebbiolo. For more than 150 years, these two indigenous grape varieties have produced Italy’s most distinctive wines, known for their uniqueness, their history and their prestige. The parish church, or pieve, of Santa Restituta stands on the property and gives the estate its name. Wine has been made here since the 12th century. Pieve S. Restituta produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines: Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille and Brunello di Montalcino Rennina.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is beautifully balanced and elegant. The wine is successfully streamlined and focused on the nuanced characteristics of the otherwise warm and sunny 2015 vintage. Rennina is often considered to be the more lithe and graceful of Gaja's two Brunellos (the other being Sugarille that is also reviewed here). The bouquet opens to pretty berry nuances, blue flower, lavender, grilled herb and powdery licorice. Despite the more delicate approach, Rennina delivers ample power in the mouth with fresh acidity and tight tannins. I'd suggest opening this bottle at the 10-year mark. Production is 11,000 bottles.
