Description

Eben Sadie started his winemaking career working for Charles Back’s Spice Route – labelled wines before breaking off on his own in 1999. Over the past decade he has acquired the reputation as the most innovative, even anarchic winemaker in South Africa. 7 vineyards and 3 different soils make up his tiny 7 hectare farm. Columella, his red wine, named after one of the wine trade's earliest scribes, sees 24 months in oak and is racked every 6 months. Eben's white wine, Palladius, is arguably more impressive still: a delicious blend of 60+ year-old bush vine Chenin Blanc and Viognier.

The 2017 Columella begins with a dusty essence and dark-fruited core, that is dusty yet still has a softness to the nose. The palate is expressive with an austere peppery edge that is tightly wound with dusty tannins and a sandy powdering of blackberry, dark cherry and black plum skin. Ethereally structured, the wine has power and precision that is highly complex and will age for decades to come. The finish is shy, yet still having the depth and breadth of a fine wine, that lingers with a firm dusty minerality and tannic grip. Wow! What focus! Wine Advocate 93
