Description

Bodegas La Caña was founded by Jorge Ordoñez in 2008 with his aim to produce a classic style of Albariño. Jorge had long been enamoured with the exotic white wines of northern Spain and was one of the first to introduce wines like Albariño, Txakoli and Godello to the North American market. After an already great start, Jorge hired New Zealand winemaker Natalie Christensen in 2013, to oversee the production of La Caña. Natalie started her career at Saint Clair Family Estate in Marlborough and her experience with cool-climate white grapes, especially Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, added tremendous value to the production of a classic and austere style of Rias Baixas Albariño.

Their 2014 La Cana Albarino, which is from a north-facing vineyard, is aged in stainless steel, although small portions are often barrel-fermented, depending on the vintage. This is a beauty: crisp, exotic, with white peach, honeysuckle and assorted tropical fruits, as well as apricot notes. It is medium bodied, fresh, lively and spent eight months on its lees. Naked in its fruit expression, this wine should drink nicely for another 1-2 years. Wine Advocate 90 (2014)
