Description

Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, in 1971, on his return from France, Josh Jensen set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California. In 1975 he planted his first 24 acres of Pinot Noir in three separate parcels. In 1983 he planted 2 acres of viognier - one of the first winemakers to do so in California. Today he has 47 acres of Pinot Noir, 11 acres of Chardonnay, and 5 acres of Viognier.

From one of the cooler terroirs on the estate, the 2012 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard offers full-bodied richness and depth to go with ample sweet black cherries, cassis, sassafras, crushed flowers and toasted spice. A decidedly hedonistic, full throttled example of this cuvee, this superb Pinot Noir firms up nicely on the finish and has a full, layered mid-palate. Drink it now, or cellar it for a decade.
