Description

Diamond Creek is California's first exclusively Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Vineyard. It was established in 1968 by Al Brounstein, a visionary pioneer who planted Bordeaux varietals on secluded Diamond Mountain in the northern Mayacamas Range of the Napa Valley. The Diamond Creek property has three separate vineyards: Red Rock Terrace, Gravelly Meadow and Volcanic Hill, each with a distinct microclimate and soil type. In certain years when conditions produce an exceptional wine, a Lake Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is released. Red Rock Terrace, a warm microclimate, is 7 acres of north facing vineyard. The red tinted soil is high in iron content. The wine from Red Rock Terrace is the most accessible and earliest drinkable of all the Diamond Creek wines.

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill has a saturated ruby/purple color that’s generally as dense and dark as the Red Rock Terrace. Deep crème de cassis, crushed rock, spring flower and blueberry notes are all present. This full-bodied wine is deep, backward, and probably just as young and youthful for a ten-year-old as the Red Rock Terrace. With plenty of tannin, beautiful fruit and great purity, this should turn into something special as well, but it needs another five or more years of bottle age. It’s hard to pick a favorite between this and the Red Rock Terrace, but if you’re looking for earlier drinkability, Gravelly Meadow wins hands-down. Wine Advocate 95+
