Description

The Rieslings from Egon Müller are widely recognised as amongst the very best in Germany today. He has just under 8 hectares of vines in the world-famous Scharzhofberg vineyard, which includes 3 hectares of ungrafted Riesling vines from the 19th century. Grapes are hand-harvested and then pressed without any skin contact before being fermented in large, 1000 litre oak casks in the natural, cool and deep cellars. The wines are usually bottled 6 months later. Müller`s sweet Rieslings are arguably the finest in Mosel, while his Kabinett and Spätlese wines are unusually fine and elegant.

The 2017 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is almost austere on the bright and herbal-mineral, quite coolish and concentrated nose that's somewhat phenolic. Round and lush on the first palate, it offers a concentrated fruit core and crystalline acidity intermingled with slate flavors. This is a pure and filigreed yet tightly woven Kabinett that's only discreetly sweet and has a quite substantial, somewhat drying or astringent finish. Is that cork or just austere? A second bottle from the rare leftovers fetched by Veronika Lindner was clearer and much finer and without irritating astringency. Jancis Robinson 18/20
