Description

100% Chenin Blanc, grown on the calcareous soils in and around Brézé. More precisely, it comes from younger vines in the Clos de Guichaux (see below) and the Clos des Carmes, as well some old vines from a parcel in the Bas de Pentes terroir of Brézé. As any Saumurois will tell you these terroirs are considered to be some of the crown jewels of Saumur - particularly the Clos des Carmes which sits on the Brézé hills' chalky throne, just below the Chateau de Brézé. With this in mind, perhaps the soaring quality of this wine shouldn't come as a surprise. The age of the vineyards ranges from 4-60 years old. All of Guiberteau's whites are whole-bunch pressed and fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts. Now raised entirely in tank, and all the better for it, the 2014 strikes the palate with a super punchy, crunchy, apple and citrus pith noted wine, with brisk acidity and the intense, chalky length so typical of top Saumur. It's an impressive Saumur blanc and an exciting hors-d'oeuvre for Guiberteau's single-vineyard wines. Still very young and tight, this is best served not too cold.
