Description

The Jean-Marc Brocard domaine started life in 1973 with one hectare of vines, a gift from his father-in-law. Vineyard holdings have grown to 180ha, mainly, but not exclusively, in Chablis. As an outsider and a newcomer to winemaking he was prepared to innovate and break from established practices, such as the introduction of mechanical harvesting, which allows the grapes to arrive at the cuverie in fresher condition. Despite the size of the vineyard holdings, each parcel is vinified separately to preserve the character of the individual terroir. Biodynamic principles are observed and no herbicides or pesticides are used.

Struck flint along with oily, smoky, dusty impressions of broken chalk strikingly headline the aromatic performance of Brocard’s 2011 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre, and on a palpably extract-rich but by no means heavy palate, a corresponding wealth of mineral nuances takes on vibratory energy thanks to a matrix of juicy lemon, lime, and white peach. As with the corresponding Vaulorent and some other of Brocard’s 2011s, the mineral aspects segue into a white pepper bite that heightens the prevailing sense of dynamic invigoration. Look for this to perform impressively through at least 2020. Wine Advocate 92 (2011)
