Description

The Jean-Marc Brocard domaine started life in 1973 with one hectare of vines, a gift from his father-in-law. Vineyard holdings have grown to 180ha, mainly, but not exclusively, in Chablis. As an outsider and a newcomer to winemaking he was prepared to innovate and break from established practices, such as the introduction of mechanical harvesting, which allows the grapes to arrive at the cuverie in fresher condition. Despite the size of the vineyard holdings, each parcel is vinified separately to preserve the character of the individual terroir. Biodynamic principles are observed and no herbicides or pesticides are used.

The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey is raised entirely in stainless steel like the Montmains. Julien told me that it is this vineyard that has reacted the most positively toward biodynamic vineyard husbandry. It has a hint of popcorn and almond on the well-defined bouquet that is more expressive than the Montmains at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, touches of dried apricot and lemon curd with a nicely composed, elegant finish. This is one of Brocard's best premier crus this year. Drink now-2020.
