Description

Phil Sexton named his Yarra Valley winery after the John Coltrane album of that name. It also recognizes the giant step he made when he sold his winery in Margaret River to move to Victoria. The winemaking philosophy is to focus exclusively on the distinctive expression of single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley, with the emphasis on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winery is designed to work on gravity flow and minimal intervention. Visitors to the cellar door can also enjoy the wines at their acclaimed bistro.

All of the 2017 Pinots from Giant Steps are seriously commendable. I'm not sure they'll age all that long, but for drinking over the next few years, you won't find many better Australian options. The 2017 Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir boasts piercing red-fruit aromas that resemble maraschino cherries, cranberries, raspberries and strawberries. It's medium-bodied, with silky, ripe tannins and a touch of sous-bois, while the finish returns to red-berry purity. There was 40% whole bunch and 25% new oak, but those elements are skillfully woven into the fabric of the wine as a whole. Wine Advocate 93 (2017)
