Description

Edward Tyrrell planted his first vines in the Hunter Valley in 1858 establishing Tyrrell's Wines. His first vintage was in 1864 and by the turn of the century the land had became recognized as some of the Hunter Valley's finest vineyard land. The Hunter Valley was ideal for the production of premium wines, notably Shiraz in the reds and Semillon in the whites. These two varieties provided the basis for the beginning of the Tyrrell's premium Winemaker's Selection Range. From being a very traditional Hunter Valley winery, Tyrrell's have expanded their portfolio to include some excellent new wines from Victoria and McLaren Vale, under their Rufus Stone label.

The 2009 Winemaker's Selection Vat 47 Hunter Chardonnay presents a nose that is still a little closed to begin, then opens out to fragrant stone fruit and spiced pear notes with suggestions of cashews, ginger and chalk dust. Light to medium-bodied, it's more expressive on the palate with mouth-filling peaches and nut flavors marked by crisp acid and great length that contributes some creaminess on the finish. Drink it now to 2018+. WA92 (2009)
