Description

The Rieslings from Egon Müller are widely recognised as amongst the very best in Germany today. He has just under 8 hectares of vines in the world-famous Scharzhofberg vineyard, which includes 3 hectares of ungrafted Riesling vines from the 19th century. Grapes are hand-harvested and then pressed without any skin contact before being fermented in large, 1000 litre oak casks in the natural, cool and deep cellars. The wines are usually bottled 6 months later. Müller`s sweet Rieslings are arguably the finest in Mosel, while his Kabinett and Spätlese wines are unusually fine and elegant.

Egon Müller's 2013 Scharzhof Riesling contains the whole declassified pickings of Le Galais' Wiltinger Braune Kupp, as well as the fruit from younger vines or declassified grapes from the Scharzhofberg. Pale-green as always, the wine opens clear and discreet but ripe, intense, lime-fresh and floral on the nose displaying green apple, Waldmeister and botrytis aromas intertwined with aristocratic slate flavors as subtle as possible. Stunningly dense and full-bodied on the palate, this intense and slightly sweet, elegant, minerally structured and stringent Saar Riesling reveals a remarkable complexity and a good aging potential. In case you can't (or don't want to) afford the sumptuous Scharzhofberger predicates, the 2013 Scharzhof Riesling is a good and potent alternative. Wine Advocate 90+ (2013)
