Description

This mission of preservation was kick-started in earnest during the early years of the 21st Century, when Rodrigo Méndez and respected winemaker Raúl Pérez joined forces to produce not just some of the most astonishing Albariño available, but also the rare Galician reds that just a century beforehand were the pride of the region. Using tradition methods learnt over generations, Forjas del Salnes was born in a garage winery in 2005, and named after the ironworks set up by his grandfather, Francisco Méndez. Here they work the fruits from just 7.5 hectares of vines, grown in the villages of Meaño, Sanxenxo and Barro.

Produced again for a second time after the initial 2005, I now tasted the 2013 Leirana M. Luisa Lazaro, a long-aging Albariño. Half of the volume aged in stainless steel and the other half in oak foudre for six months, then blended and put back in stainless until bottling. It was bottled in January 2017, three and a half years after the harvest, and might be kept in bottle and sold a little later. It's not really the same wine as the 2013, which was a high acidity vintage with a much longer élevage. This is gentler and more mineral, but the 2005 was sharper and that's why it was kept for such a long time. 2,500 bottles produced.Wine Advocate 93
