Description

Located in the village of Orschwihr and established in 1691, Domaine Valentin Zusslin is a biodynamic estate now managed by 13th generation brother and sister team of Jean-Paul and Marie Zusslin. The vines are planted on the slopes of the Bollenberg, Clos Liebenberg and Grand Cru Pfingstberg. In 1997 the domaine converted to biodynamic viticulture. Most of the work in the vineyard and in the cellar is done by hand, this allows the grapes to express the full potential and the unique terroirs of the Domaine.

Zusslin's 2014 Pinot Gris Bollenberg shows not the smallest hints of the fruit fly suzukii on the deep, ripe, intense and mineral (and slightly oaky) nose. Full-bodied and creamy on the palate, this is a powerful but also elegant and intense, firmly structured and slightly tannic Pinot that is far too young to be fully appreciated today. (Jesus, that's rich and powerful Pinot!) The wine is concentrated and complex but also elegant, fresh and finessed, revealing a long and promising, Cognac-like sweet finish. I'd keep the 2014 for at least another two or three years and would drink it over a period of ten years. Wine Advocate 91+ (2014)
