Description

31% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah, 19% Carignan, 10% Cinsault, 10% Pinotage. This may be the only wine in which Pinotage is blended with Grenache! 2017 is the first vintage of this wine to be majority Grenache, and David & Nadia intend this to continue for all future Elpidios blends. (They want to release a single-vineyard Grenache too.) Mostly granite soils from the Paardeberg, blended with structured shale/schists from the east, clay from the north and iron-mixed soils from the west – eight vineyards in total. Variety of vine ages. Average 50% whole bunches, pressed off and matured in a mix of large-format vertical foudre and old 500-litre neutral French oak barrels. Matured for a year before bottling and then matured in bottle for 18 months before release. Yield 1.5–3.5 t/ha. 7,000 bottles produced.Mid ruby colour. Spicy, layered nose. Salty finish, with lots of presence in the mouth. Lively and elegant but with a firm structure. A clearly superior red. Jancis Robinson 17/20
