Description

Joshua Cooper is another of the younger brigade of Victorian winemakers doing really exciting things. He is taking some of Victoria's best sustainable and organic/biodynamic vineyards and putting them on show. This is an exploration of his surroundings through wine, made without artifice, to be a reflection of its place and season. The first vintage was 2012, with a single barrel of wine made from fruit his parents grew at Cobaw Ridge vineyard. This has since expanded to a more varied range, including historic styles as well as the more experimental and esoteric. The releases and tiny. These are classic, medium-weight wines of elegance and purity, with an Old World self-confidence and a carefully measured degree of winemaking input.

There is energy and vitality in these Cooper Pinots. They're hopping with it. This 2021 Doug's Vineyard Pinot Noir is earthy and dusty (coal dust) and black, with a core of juicy, supple, exotic, almost sleek fruit wedged into the folds of tannin in the mouth. It's evocative and bloody, with an undertow of savory leaf (saltbush and tobacco) beneath it all. The flow and life here is a breath of fresh and eloquent air. Wine Advocate 94 (2021)
