This 2021 Dr Mayer Pinot Noir is made in Timo's distinctive 100% whole bunch style and within a distinct flavor spectrum too. It has olive brine, hints of tapenade, pimenton paprika, just-ripe cherries, dehydrated orange zest, Sichuan peppercorns and spines of acidity that flex over the tongue. This is wild, stylized and high-toned. I'm a big proponent of being proud of what you've got right underneath your nose, and to me, this speaks of Yarra Valley through a focused lens. A place, and a person, as well. It's exciting drinking, but don't go at it expecting something straightforward: this is complex thinking juice. The 2021 vintage (excellent) is not a bad lens of appraisal through which to view this, either. Wine Advocate 94
