Description

I knew it was only a matter of time until they bottled a Carmenere for their 20 Barrels range, and the 2017 20 Barrels Carmenere was the first vintage. It was produced with grapes from Cachapoal and contains not only Carmenere (from Peumo) but also 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Syrah. It fermented with selected yeasts and matured in new French oak barrels for 16 months. Winemaker Matías Ríos told me how he learned to manage Carmenere after the very difficult 2016 vintage when the late-ripening varieties suffered and then no longer feared picking early, and that's how they decided to produce this first Carmenere in the 20 Barrels range. This is herbal and spicy, with a soft palate, fine tannins and a dry, serious finish. The variety seems to welcome the warmer years like this 2017, but the wine avoids the over-ripeness of the past. It opens up nicely in the glass, developing spicier aromas and more complexity. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2018. Wine Advocate 91 (2017)
