Description

Jean-Marc Joblot has built himself a reputation as one of Burgundys best winemakers. The Joblot family estate consists of 14 hectares in the little known appellation of Givry. Once well known and much in demand (in fact, Givry was reputed to be the favorite wine of the French King, Henry IV), destruction by phylloxera in the late 1800s and two World Wars led to its decline. Today, it is still under-appreciated and represents excellent value.

Domaine Joblot is Givry’s best estate. One of the reasons must be the controlled harvest: 35-42hl/ha in average. The second must be the age of the vines: many old vines. And the most important reason comes from the extremely talent wine maker: Mr Jean Marc Joblot put his signature to his wines.

The 2017 Givry 1er Cru Clos Marole had already come together nicely when I tasted it, revealing a deeper-pitched bouquet than the Bois Cheveaux and featuring notes of juicy cherries, wild berries and warm spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and juicy, with promising substance and nicely refined tannins. Also east-facing, the vines here are 40 years old and the underlying geology more serious.Wine Advocate 90-93 (2017)
