Description

Paitin Di Pasquro-Elia has been producing wine for centuries and their wines have received high praise for many years. It's one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Piemonte, established in 1796, and currently run by the 7th generation of the Pasquro-Elia family. Brothers Giovanni and Silvano recently enlisted the services of consulting oenologist Dante Scaglione, who spent 16 years alongside the famous Bruno Giacosa. Dante’s addition has resulted in a slight change of style, focused more on freshness and earlier approachability, but the wines still show the true character of what made Paitin great in the first place.

The 1989 Barbaresco Sori Paitin reveals evidence of new oak cask aging in its smoky, vanillin nose complemented by generous aromas of sweet black-cherries, cedar, and spices. The wine is full-bodied, deep, and rich, with a harmonious integration of moderate tannin, and a long, lusty, expansive richness. While approachable now, it should be at its best by the late nineties and easily last through the first decade of the next century. Pasquero has turned in two superlative performances with respect to his single vineyard Barbaresco. Perhaps because the 1989 has had more time to evolve, it appears more complex and easier to comprehend than the large-scaled, full-bodied, rich, concentrated, but tannic 1990. Wine Advocate 90
