Description

Complexity, texture and structure are the three main words in Escarpement’s vocabulary as their experienced team strive to produce the very best New World wines from high-quality grapes grown on alluvial gravel, terraced land along the bank of the Huangarua River. Escarpment’s vineyard director and winemaker Larry McKenna has firmly established himself as a leading winemaker and is particularly respected as one of New Zealand’s pre-eminent Pinot Noir winemakers. Referred to by various wine writers and authorities as the ‘Godfather of Pinot Noir’ Larry has built a solid reputation for understanding and gaining the best out of this typically stubborn and capricious grape.

From a vineyard planted 30 years ago to a mix of clones, the 2017 Te Rehua Pinot Noir is one of the stars of a difficult vintage. It follows McLenna's recent strategy of including a large proportion of stems, but it balances that element with ripe, black-cherry flavors. It's medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with firm but velvet-coated tannins and a long, long finish.Wine Advocate 93+
