Description

Near the Southernmost point of Africa lies a valley named Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) framed by mountains and within sight of the ocean, with frost free, soft, beneficial weather and the most perfect clay shale vineyard soils. Established in 1989, Bouchard Finlayson is a boutique winery (the 125-hectare property currently has 22 hectares under vine) dedicated to making Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines of outstanding quality.

The 2014 Hannibal is a blend of 33% Sangiovese, 22% Pinot Noir, 18% Shiraz, 17% Nebbiolo, 6% Mourvedre and 4% Barbera (a drop more Shiraz to give it more structure after the rainy growing season). It has an attractive bouquet: red plum, cranberry and pressed flowers, the grape varieties working in harmony with each other. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, neatly integrated oak, fennel and wild mint infusing the red berry fruit with a brisk and bright finish. This might be the best Hannibal that I have tasted. Wine Advocate 91
