Description

Husband and wife team David and Nadia Sadie have quickly made a name for themselves with superb, natural and honest wines true to the Swartland. David gained experience both locally (Waterford, Rustenberg and Saronsberg) and internationally (South Pacific Cellars – New Zealand, Chateau Quinault – France, Yves Quilleron – France). His wines are now rated as some of the best in South Africa by influential international and local wine critics.

First vintage was 2011. Based on fruit from one sustainably farmed vineyard on granite in Paardeberg planted in the early 2000s, blended with a similar-age organically certified vineyard planted in deep clay soils north of Malmesbury. They describe Grenache as their ‘ultimate red variety … well suited to the Swartland in its droughts and harsh conditions’ – hence they are planting much more. In the context of dry-farmed land and poor soil they use mass-selection Grenache grafted on moderate-strength rootstocks to restrict yield. Four weeks on the skins pre-/during fermentation, 60% whole bunch, one punchdown per day. Pressed off and matured in old 500-litre neutral French oak barrels for a year. Yield 1.5–3 t/ha. 7,000 bottles produced.Pale ruby. Very pale rim. Sweet, meaty, very Grenache nose. Lots of acidity and freshness on the palate. Elegant, pure style – super-fresh. Very reverberant and bone dry on the finish. Very distinctive. Jancis Robinson 17/20
