Description

The latest in Rebholz’s distinguished line of late-disgorged Chardonnay-Pinot Noir cuvées, inaugurated in 1991, was based on only the heart of the pressing and spent nearly a hundred months sur pointe. Pungent, high-toned scents of sweat, sea breeze, Calvados, buckwheat flower and hickory nut set the stage for a similarly multifaceted performance on a palate of almost custardy richness yet not lacking invigorating tang or cut. (By contrast, the 2007 – which I reviewed alongside Rebholz’s 2014s – felt quite firm, almost stiff.) The finish is mouthwateringly saline and persistently complex; smoky aspects of lees autolysis remain prominent but produce no drying effect. Here’s further proof that Rebholz’s π NO Brut is among the most fascinating and successful (albeit also most expensive) German sparkling wines, and that his high estimation of vintage 2008 (which he compares with 2016) doesn’t just apply to Riesling.
