Kanta Riesling by Egon Muller is a unique winemaking partnership between superstar German winemaker Egon Muller and Michael Andrewartha where German tradition and precision meets the premium, cool climate fruit from the Adelaide Hills. Kanta is the Sanskrit word meaning desired, beloved and beautiful. With this wine Egon Muller brings his own distinctive approach to the Adelaide Hills and appears set to break the mould of Australian Rieslings. Not being a fan of the heavy, rich and full-bodied Clare Valley wines that epitomise Australia's approach to Germany's favourite variety, he has set up shop in a cooler region and produced this lean and elegant take on Aussie Riesling. The result is a refined, floral, bone-dry Riesling with none of the heavy, developed, petrolly notes that wreath so many Australian Rieslings.

Made by the top German producer Egon Muller, the 2009 Kanta gives elegant, restrained citrus aromas with notes of lemon zest and grapefruit peel plus nuances of acacia honey, chalk and wet slate. The palate is concentrated and tight-knit, very young and steely, giving plenty of green apple and citrus flavors, refreshing acid and a long minerally finish. It’s very tempting to drink now but should reward 3-5 years of cellaring and drink to 2020+. Wine Advocate 93+ (2009)
