Description

The Rieslings from Egon Müller are widely recognised as amongst the very best in Germany today. He has just under 8 hectares of vines in the world-famous Scharzhofberg vineyard, which includes 3 hectares of ungrafted Riesling vines from the 19th century. Grapes are hand-harvested and then pressed without any skin contact before being fermented in large, 1000 litre oak casks in the natural, cool and deep cellars. The wines are usually bottled 6 months later. Müller`s sweet Rieslings are arguably the finest in Mosel, while his Kabinett and Spätlese wines are unusually fine and elegant. Egon III extended the winery in 1954 by purchasing Weingut "Le Gallais". This winery with 2.5 hectares (6.2 acres) vines in Wiltingen, comprising the single vineyards „Kupp“ and „braune Kupp“ hailed originally from family Metz.

The 2016 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese has a very delicate slate and ripe yet fine Spätlese aroma. Lush, round and piquant on the palate, the 2016 reveals an exciting mineral freshness and attractive juiciness, with crisp and stimulating fruit notes. The finish is tight, fresh and grippy, indicating very good aging potential. I’d recommend cellaring this wine for at least another 10 years. Tasted March 2018. Wine Advocate 94 (2016)
