Description

Located in the village of Orschwihr and established in 1691, Domaine Valentin Zusslin is a biodynamic estate now managed by 13th generation brother and sister team of Jean-Paul and Marie Zusslin. The vines are planted on the slopes of the Bollenberg, Clos Liebenberg and Grand Cru Pfingstberg. In 1997 the domaine converted to biodynamic viticulture. Most of the work in the vineyard and in the cellar is done by hand, this allows the grapes to express the full potential and the unique terroirs of the Domaine.

The 2007 Riesling Grand Cru Pfingstberg offers a super precise, intense, fresh and mineral bouquet of bright fruits (candied lemon and orange peel), flowers and milled sandstone along with lovely flavors of maturity and potted ginger. There is a great purity and lemon-freshness on the nose which is repeated on the palate where a certain austerity and piquancy is revealed but most of all a ripe and concentrated, well-structured fruit along with a lingering, salty minerality. The finish is complex and very persistent but the wine is still young and tension-filled. I would either decant it for some hours or, much better, keep it in the cellar for 2 to 12 more years. There are at least 10 years to go for this impressively incisive and concentrated Pfingstberg Riesling. Wine Advocate 93 (2007)
