Description

The name Kanonkop is derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers of ships approaching the Cape. Today, Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region. They have been described by those in the know as the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru or First Growth and their collection of international awards is testament to this success.

This brilliant red blend – now part of the Cape’s elite – comes from the same trio of vineyards each year. A triumph in a difficult vintage, it has the lowest alcohol since 1993 and artfully combines Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Cabernet Franc and 11% Merlot, with ageing in new oak. Poised, structured, yet fresh, with cedarwood, red cherry and blackberry fruit, elegant tannins and a long, balanced finish. Classy stuff. 2025-35’ Tim Atkin 98
