Description

Phil Sexton named his Yarra Valley winery after the John Coltrane album of that name. It also recognizes the giant step he made when he sold his winery in Margaret River to move to Victoria. The winemaking philosophy is to focus exclusively on the distinctive expression of single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley, with the emphasis on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winery is designed to work on gravity flow and minimal intervention. Visitors to the cellar door can also enjoy the wines at their acclaimed bistro.

Fatal Shore is Giant Steps first venture outside of the Yarra Valley sourcing fruit from the Nocton vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Fruit is hand picked straight into a refrigerated container parked on the vineyard. It then sails immediately across Bass Strait where it’s received into the Giant Steps Yarra Valley winery the following morning. Maturation took place in French oak, 25% new, for a period of 8 months. Deep bright dark red core with black tinged edges and a light red purple hue. Perfumed aromatics of violets, dark cherries and strawberries complexed by hints of anise sail out of the glass with subtle forest floor, fresh herbs and faint smoky cedar ensuing. Rich cherry and strawberry fruits flood the mouth underscored by subtle anise, forest floor, infusions of fresh herbs and delicate spicy cedar. Supple textural feel finishing with an abundance of freshness and silky tannins. Outstanding power wave with a long delicious conclusion.
