Phil Sexton named his Yarra Valley winery after the John Coltrane album of that name. It also recognizes the giant step he made when he sold his winery in Margaret River to move to Victoria. The winemaking philosophy is to focus exclusively on the distinctive expression of single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley, with the emphasis on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winery is designed to work on gravity flow and minimal intervention. Visitors to the cellar door can also enjoy the wines at their acclaimed bistro.

More complex, darker-fruited and richer than Giant Steps' other 2017s, the 2017 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir combines Clones 115, MV6 and Pommard. Musky underbrush, humus and sassafras notes add nuance to the black cherry fruit and subtle oak (25% new French). It's medium-bodied, with silky but sturdy tannins that suggest it will outlive its stablemates. Drink now and up to 2025. Wine Advocate 94 (2017)
