Description
Jean-Marc DuFouleur's father assembled his small domaine in the 1960s, but its principle constituent – the same vines that inform the Domaine des Monts Luisants 2006 Morey-St.-Denis Monts Luisants – were for a long time sold to Moillard (whence they regularly appeared in the U.S. market in the 1980s). The impressively conscientious younger DuFouleur – whom I last visited to taste his 2003s and 2004s, but from whom I tasted only this one 2006 as a sample – also bottles a tiny bit of Les Genaivrieres (from just south of Monts Luisants) and less than a barrique's worth of adjacent Clos de la Roche. His signature 2006 features a remarkable, ethereal aroma of yellow plum; fresh cherry shadowed by maraschino; tangerine zest and blood orange; and bittersweet iris and lily perfume. Mouth-filling yet so buoyant as to be almost delicate; refined in tannin; and with hints of crushed stone and marrow adding depth to is persistently fresh and high-toned fruit concentration, this finishes with a transparency to floral and mineral nuances as well as a lift and brightness that remind one we are in terroir that births one of the Cote d'Or's most unusual and wonderful white wines, too (by which, of course, I refer to Ponsot's dominantly-Aligote Monts Luisants). This remarkable wine – which strikes me as quite 2006-specific (though it will be fascinating to follow DuFouleur's own evolution) – should not be missed now, but should also be worth following for at least 6-8 years.
