Description

The name Kanonkop is derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers of ships approaching the Cape. Today, Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region. They have been described by those in the know as the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru or First Growth and their collection of international awards is testament to this success.

A limited edition Paul Sauer from the 2009 vintage was specially labelled and packaged in a striking gift box to commemorate 50 years of the Kanonkop wine brand from 1973 – 2023. A blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, it is a fitting tribute to our winemakers Jan Boland Coetzee, Beyers Truter and Abrie Beeslaar who have crafted our wines over five decades, as well as to the estate’s legendary founder, Paul Sauer. A highly awarded wine, it also received the prestigious Pichon Longueville Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the IWSC in 2013.
