Description

The entry-level 2013 Macán Clásico is a cuvée from their 130 plots of vineyards in the Sonsierra zone of Rioja. It matured in barrel for one year before it was bottled. They tend to harvest quite early. "We start with the reds when people are finishing with the whites," Pablo Álvarez told me, and that probably was beneficial in a harvest when there was a lot of rain. This 2013 showed quite elegant and fresh, with more red fruit and sweet spices (cinnamon, vanilla), quite approachable. The oak seems better integrated than in previous years. It's very tasty, with the spices covering the sweet tannins and a long, very tasty and lively finish. Fresh and drinkable, sweeter and more accessible than the regular Macán. 39,500 bottles and some larger formats. In 2013 ,they had to sort and select the fruit, as it was a complex year, and it resulted in less bottles than in previous vintages. Wine Advocate 92

This is the most anticipated new project in Rioja in the last few years. After all, how often does the Rothschild family of Lafite fame in Bordeaux and Vega Sicilia from Ribera del Duero, one of the most prestigious wineries in Spain get together to make wine in one of the classical regions of the world? The first wines are from the warm, ripe 2009 vintage, and I-d say that save for the American oak, the wines have a certain Vega Sicilia character, clean and pure. I had tasted the wines a couple of times before and found them too powerful. Now they seem finer, more integrated. - Wine Advocate
