Description

Established in 1810, Schlumberger is one of the most reliable and respected names from Alsace. The family is also the largest holders of Grand Cru vineyards in the area, including ownership in Kessler, Kitterle, Saering and Spiegel. Lying on Guebwiller’s splendid slopes, this 140 hectare domaine stretches over more than 5 kilometres on the southern side of the Vosges. At an altitude of 250 to 380 metres it benefits from a splendid climate which has led this valley to be called the "Valley of Flowers". The slopes have light sandy soil due to the slow erosion of the underlying pink sandstone. This vineyard faces south-east, south and south-west meaning that it is ideally exposed to the sun. The vines themselves stretch for 850 kilometres (570 miles) in horizontally planted rows along 5 terraces which are protected by dry-stone walls.

The 2017 Pinot Gris Grand Cru Kessler opens with a clear, precise and savory, very elegant and aromatic nose with flinty fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a rich but elegant and savory, crystalline and finely bitter Pinot Gris with intense and juicy lemon/grapefruit structured by fine tannins and crystalline acidity and with stimulating bitters on the intense and sustainable finish. Bottled with 13.95% de facto alcohol and 24.73 grams per liter of residual sugar, this is a far more tensioned and stimulating Pinot Gris compared to the 2015 Kitterlé. Natural cork. Tasted in February 2023. Wine Advocate 92+
