Description

Terroir Al Limit is a true garage wine project focusing on the old vines around the village of Torroja. The philosophy of the estate is to capture the character of the terroir by minimizing the effect of winemaking to minimal processing and natural handling of the grapes. The vines are farmed biodynamically although they are not certified. Terroir Al Limit is actually a partnership between Dominik and South African winemaker Eben Sadie. Their first vintage was 2001. They are clearly the outsiders in the area, but are very keen on resurrecting a traditional Priorat style of winemaking (larger neutral oak foudres instead of new barrique, for example). They farm biodynamically, harvest earlier than most, ferment with native yeasts and use minimal amounts of SO2. Terroir Al Limit focuses almost exclusively on old vine grenache and carignan with the star of the show being carignan.

The white 2021 Terroir Históric Blanc comes from a very good year complicated by lots of rain during the harvest. It's a bit reductive from the recent bottling some three months before I tasted it, and the wine needs a little bit of time in bottle or in a decanter if you open it soon. They have lowered the skin contact; it's mostly direct pressing and just a small part of whole berries. It has 13% alcohol, moderate ripeness and some volume and Mediterranean character. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2022. Wine Advocate 92
